The greatest leaders put the welfare of their people ahead of their own. Whether in business, politics, religion, non-profits—any field, any industry, any organization—leaders serve their people. That’s what leadership is: service. Helping others win. The moment a leader makes it about themselves, they’ve abdicated their role. A leader who serves only themselves is a tyrant, plain and simple. The "What can you do for me?" mentality is selfish and tyrannical. Effective leaders ask: "What can I do for you?"
If service is beneath you, then leadership is way beyond you.
Impactful leaders understand that being useful to others builds self-worth, self-esteem, and confidence—both in themselves and in those they serve. That’s the real value of leadership.
If your leadership is useless to people, you’re a useless leader—period. Don’t get it twisted and think leadership is about holding a position or title. Your everyday decisions either add or subtract value. Every decision—whether it seems significant or insignificant—makes a difference.
Make sure you’re leading for the good of others, not for yourself.
