A coalition of more than 200 organizations just mounted a successful, coordinated demonstration against authoritarianism. The “No Kings” show of solidarity from 22 nations is a much-needed jolt of encouragement and a powerful boost for democracy, which has taken a particularly hard hit lately.
Celebrate the win, loudly. Public, unapologetic opposition to dictatorial philosophies and tactics is vital.
But do not rest. Resist.
Tyranny doesn’t begin with violence. It begins with acquiescence.
And far too many of our countrymen still cooperate with lies.
Authoritarianism was humiliated yesterday. It will retaliate with more inhumanity and repression.
The threat isn’t just the cruelty. It’s the normalization of cruelty.
Authoritarianism does not self-limit.
It expands until it collapses or is actively resisted.
That’s why resistance must make oppression expensive.
Morally. Socially. Economically.
It’s the only way power ever relinquishes control.
In this moment, patriotism means being proud of our founding, acknowledging the ways we have fallen short, and striving toward a better future.
These principles must guide us when the difficult days return.
